Biography

Full biographical note

Giovanni Lorusso is an author and editor of the Varchi Books publishing project. He writes about cities, places, heritage, visual culture and contemporary transformation, developing books that bring together documentary research, narrative non-fiction and close attention to form.

In the Biografie di pietra series, places, architectures, landscapes, works and symbols become narrative points of view. The first-person voice does not replace research: it grows out of historical sources, material evidence, images, maps, archives and practices of inhabiting. His work looks for the point at which a lived place becomes heritage or image, allowing what beauty risks erasing to become legible again.

In the atlases and essays of the Metamorfosi Visive series, he investigates the life of images: the ways in which myth, copying, artifice and representation move across periods and media, sometimes becoming more recognisable than the history from which they emerged.

His books include Io, Matera. Biografia di un organismo scavato, Piazza Navona. Biografia di una piazza and The Trojan Horse. Atlas of a Beautiful Lie. His editorial method combines accuracy of sources, clarity of writing and a narrative form capable of changing the distance from which the reader approaches the subject.
