Controluce

Controluce is the civil non-fiction series of Varchi Books. It looks at territories, work, departure, spatial inequality and social transformation without searching for an easy target or a thesis that can be contained entirely within a slogan.

Backlighting makes visible what frontal light tends to erase. The books in the series therefore often begin with words that appear to explain everything already — development, district, opportunity, mobility, attractiveness, return — and test what remains outside the frame when those words are confronted with the actual lives of people and places.

Documentary research, data and sources are central, but they are organised within readable, argumentative prose. The aim is not to simplify complexity. It is to find a form capable of moving through it without turning the reader into a specialist and without reducing conflict to a polemical posture.

Controluce publishes books that look for a question before a solution. They examine the distance between what a territory promises and what it genuinely makes possible, between declared policies and their daily effects, between the way a phenomenon is narrated and the human cost that narrative can make invisible.
