Biografie di pietra

Places, architectures, landscapes, works and symbols are given a voice, telling in the first person what time, use and transformation have deposited in their material form.

Editorial profile

A line of enquiry

Biografie di pietra is a series of narrative essays in which place does not remain in the background. It becomes the point of view from which history is observed. A carved city, a square, an ancient road, a monument, a landscape or a symbol speaks in the first person and reconstructs the transformations that have passed through it.

Voice does not replace research. It grows out of sources, data, urban history, architecture, archaeology, practices of inhabiting and documented memory. The narrative device changes the reader's distance: rather than explaining a place from outside, it attempts to see time from within the material that has retained it.

Each volume looks for the point at which heritage and life enter into tension. We are interested in what happens when an inhabited place becomes an image, when a form survives the uses that produced it, when beauty smooths away memory, or when a transformation leaves marks that continue to work beneath the surface.

These are not guidebooks, nor academic monographs in disguise. They are narrative biographies of real organisms, spaces and forms: books designed to hold together historical precision, responsibility towards facts and a voice capable of returning to a place the possibility of telling its own story.
